Sliding down the right side is slightly slower overall than just jumping past it. Obviously stay off of the platforms that spin counter-clock-wise at all costs. If you jump too late, your speed will drop right back to 3. When going down, slide for extra speed, and jump off 3-4 frames before reaching the end to keep a speed of 3.23. If you don't jump right away, you'll start to slow down, since you're going uphill. From 3.0 speed, you'll boost up to 3.23 while jumping (which will be maintained until you land, or hit an enemy). When going up the clock-wise spinning platforms, jump as soon as you get on them. This gets 3.95 speed, or 4.93 with starman. The adjustable beams, which can be found in 1-2 should always be put down one notch to the right, and slide down them (except with starman just run). This means it's faster to jump over very short declines than to run down them, such as the ones before the POW block in 1-2. Going down hills causes you to slow down briefly before speeding up. Sliding with starman always (?) slows you down.

If there were not goombas on it, it'd be slightly faster to run down, but since there are, it's best to jump from the top. In this particular case, you get 2.85 speed while sliding.

Very steep slopes, such as the one right after the checkpoint in 1-1 actually slow you down it's best to jump over them, or run down them, depending on how long they are. Running down slops and sliding down them usually have the same acceleration, but sliding has a higher max speed. Standard run speed on flat ground is 3.0.
